Lid Cleaning

At Brownbills Optometrists we are able to perform an in-practice eye cleaning procedure, using BlephEx™, specifically targeted at patients suffering from blepharitis. Using BlephEx™ we can thoroughly and precisely eliminate the bacterial debris from your eyelids, which are the main causes of inflammatory lid disease.

Who is this procedure for?

This treatment is most beneficial for patients suffering from:

  • Dry Eye Disease (link to Dry Eye Tear Clinic Page)
  • Contact Lens Discomfort
  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
  • Blepharitis

Why are our tears important?

Our tears are important to the general health of the eye, keeping them comfortable, protecting the surface of the eye by removing debris and ensuring a smooth surface for clear vision. Without quality tears, your eyes can become red and uncomfortable, feel itchy or gritty, especially if you wear contact lenses.

When the surface of the eye (or contact lens) is drier than normal, the eyelids move across it and pick up the debris and bugs which haven’t been washed away. Over weeks, debris builds up on the eyelids, hardening and forming a layer similar to plaque on your teeth.

This debris can block the oil glands, which are essential in keeping the surface of the eye well lubricated with quality tears. This in turn, allows bacteria to thrive, which, if left untreated, can cause further complications.

What to expect during a Blephex Treatment?

During the procedure, the Optometrist will use a soft, medical grade sponge to clean your eyelids. The sponge is moved across your eyelids whilst spinning, removing debris and bacteria that have caused blockages of the glands around the eyelids, and exfoliating your eyelids. The procedure lasts about 6-8 minutes and most patients report a tickling sensation.

After the procedure, you will be instructed on how to maintain your cleaned eyelids with regular nightly lid hygiene. Since home treatments are only semi-effective, it is recommended that the procedure is repeated at 4-6 month intervals.

What to expect after a blephex treatment?

Immediately following, your eyes will feel clearer and you should notice improvements to your vision.

Our Optometrists will explain how to maintain your clean eyelids with a regular lid hygiene routine and may advise you to use additional products, such as eye drops, cleansing wipes, heat therapy, or omega 3.

All of these additional products can be purchased at Brownbills, or through our website shop.

How often should I have a treatment?

We recommend that you repeat your Blephex treatment once or twice a year as needed.
