Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes from the sun is paramount. It’s not just about shielding them from annoying glare but also safeguarding against the hidden threats of ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to UV light can contribute to cataracts and hasten the aging of your retinas, resulting in diminished vision as you age. Children’s eyes are especially susceptible since they’re still in development.

That’s why at Brownbills Optometrists we stock the highest quality sunglasses equipped with exceptional lenses and UV filters that offer the utmost protection and ensure a more pleasant visual experience, no matter how intense the sunlight.

Why should I invest in high-quality sunglasses?

UV Protection
Just like we protect our skin from the damaging effects of UV by wearing sunscreen, we need to protect our eyes as well. UV is present year-round and exposure can lead to eye damage.

Skin Cancer
5-10% of skin cancer occurs around the eyes and lower eyelid.

HEV Protection
25 minutes in the sun is the equivalent of 1 week of screen time at work. HEV can accelerate retinal damage over time.

Glare Reduction
Sun glare is associated with a 16% increase in serious vehicle crashes. AAA recommends investing in polarised sunglasses to reduce glare.

Comfort
Quality, polarised sunglasses increase visual comfort and reduce eyestrain, eye fatigue and headaches.

Why should I wear sunglasses year-round?

80% of consumers wear sunglasses in the summer, but only 1/3 will wear them in the winter months. However, sunglasses are beneficial to wear all year around and polorised eyewear is an essential winter accessory. Below are just a few reasons why:

  • Snow reflects 80% of UV, which puts your eyes at risk of snow blindness.
  • UV intensity increases with altitude. For every 1000m above sea level, UV increases by 16%.
  • Lower sun in the autumn and winter months can make driving conditions more dangerous.
  • During the Autumn there is less shade to protect your eyes from harmful UV.

How should I look after my sunglasses?

  1. Use a microfibre or a lens-specific cloth to clean your lenses. Do not use paper-based products when cleaning as these are made of wood pulp and can scratch sunglass lenses.
  2. For optimum performance, rinse sunglasses daily in warm water. Use a mild liquid dish or bath soap to wash each lens. Dry using a clean, soft, absorbent cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, soaps or detergents that may leave a deposit on the lens.
  3. Store sunglasses in their case when they are not in use; clean regularly to help prolong the life of the lenses and minimise scratching.
  4. Avoid placing sunglasses where excessive heat is possible as this may deteriorate the lenses and/or warp the frame.
