Braille Awareness Week

Oct 10th 2023
Did you know that Braille is more than just a writing system? It’s a lifeline for millions of visually impaired individuals worldwide, empowering them to access information, literature, and education.

We wanted to celebrate Braille Awareness Week by sharing a few interesting facts about this incredible system.

Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a Frenchman who lost his sight at the age of 3. He developed the Braille system at just 15 years old in 1824! It is now a globally recognised tactile writing system used in multiple languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and many more.

Braille characters are made up of combinations of 6 dots arranged in 2 columns of 3 dots each. This ingenious system allows for the representation of letters, numbers, and even musical notations.

It isn’t just found in books. Braille is used on signs, labels, and even on currency notes to make important information accessible. With advancements in technology, Braille displays and e-books have made it easier for visually impaired individuals to access digital content in Braille.
