MECS (Minor Eye
Conditions Service)
Emergency eye care in our community
As well as providing routine care for our patients, Brownbills are proud to be members of the East Kent Minor Eye Care Service. Often abbreviated to MECS, this community service provides patients experiencing certain eye conditions with appropriate treatment closer to home. The service is provided by a network of local optometrists with the specialist knowledge and skills to carry out this work at a locally approved optical practice such as ours.
Conditions covered by the service are as follows:
- Loss of vision including transient loss
- Ocular pain or discomfort
- Red eye
- Foreign body and emergency contact lens removal
- Dry eye
- Epiphora (watery eye)
- Trichiasis (in growing eyelashes)
- Flashes and/or floaters
- Systemic disease affecting the eye
- Lumps and Bumps (in or around the eye)
If you're unsure if what you're experiencing would be covered then please contact one of our team who will be happy to advise: 01233 625360
How much does a MECS appointment cost?
The Minor Eye Conditions Service is available without charge to anyone with a GP registered within the CCGs of Ashford, Canterbury & Coastal, South Kent Coast and Thanet. For those registered with GPs outside these areas, a private charge may apply for your visit.
