Helen graduated from City University in 1987 and undertook her pre-registration year in Woolwich London. She continued to work in South East London after qualifying as an Optometrist for a small group of independent practices. Helen is a member of The College of Optometrist. In 1990 she moved to work in Maidstone Kent. Helen has been managing Brownbills since Huw and she took over the business in 1994.

OPTOMETRIST OF THE YEAR FINALIST 2014

Huw graduated from City University in 1984 with a first class honours degree in Optometry & Visual Science. He undertook his pre-registration year at The London Refraction Hospital (now known as The Institute of Optometry) and Guys Hospital. He qualified in 1985 and became a member of The College of Optometry having been awarded the President's Prize for gaining the best overall results in the national qualification examinations. Huw then went on to gain a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Visual Science in 1992 whilst continuing to work in practice and as clinical supervisor at the Institute of Optometry. He has worked in a variety of practices across South London and Kent gaining a wide range of experience. Huw & his wife Helen took over the ownership of Brownbills in 1994 when Mr Gordon Brownbill retired.

Huw has been chairman of Kent Local Optical Committee for 10 years. He has been one of the driving forces in setting up Ophthalmic Primary Care pathways in East Kent including the cataract referral schemes and the diabetic retinal screening programme. He currently lectures on the foundation degree course in Health & Social Care at Canterbury Christchurch University, as well as providing continuing education lectures to optometrists and GPs. He serves on the Professional Liaison Committee of the Paula Carr Trust and is optometric representative on the Primary Care Trust Liaison Committee.

Huw is accredited to carry out diabetic retinal screening on behalf of the Paula Carr Trust as well as pre and post operative cataract surgery examinations in East Kent. He works closely with the Hospital Eye Service providing specialist services including complex contact lens fitting for keratoconus and cosmesis.

I studied optometry at City University and was awarded a First Class Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in 1993. I carried out my pre-registration post at the Kent County Ophthalmic and Aural Hospital in Maidstone and passed my professional qualifications in 1994. Subsequently I registered as an optometrist with the General Optical Council in 1994. Throughout my career, I have worked mainly in independent practices and providing optometric services in the community. I am married with two boys and enjoy playing tennis at the weekends with the family.
